Fiji Media Industry Development Act 2010: An Analysis

This publication analyses Fiji’s Media Industry Development Act 2010 from a journalism practice and human rights perspective. It examines the Act’s replacement of media self-regulation with government regulation, the powers of the responsible Minister and Attorney-General, the Media Industry Development Authority and Media Tribunal, complaints and appeal procedures, immunities, emergency powers, content restrictions, penalties, disclosure requirements, source protection, media ownership and media development. The report benchmarks key provisions against international freedom of expression and due process standards, identifies risks to media independence and public-interest journalism, and presents recommendations for legislative and institutional reform.
