CDD Begins Mentorship Series to Support Prospective Women and Youth Candidates

September 22, 2026

The Centre for Democracy & Dialogue (CDD) yesterday held the first of a series of mentorship sessions under its Empowering Fiji’s Women in Politics project, aimed at strengthening the preparedness, confidence and participation of women and youth ahead of Fiji’s upcoming General Election.

The session, “Navigating Political Parties,” brought together prospective election candidates nominated by political parties, with a particular focus on women and youth. Participants joined face-to-face in Suva and online, engaging in practical discussions on navigating political party structures and preparing for candidacy.

The session was led by Ms. Mereseini Rakuita, Principal Strategic Lead – Pacific Women and Girls at the Pacific Community (SPC), and former Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister. Drawing on her experience in law, public service and political leadership, Ms. Rakuita shared practical insights and lessons from her experience navigating party politics.

Participants reflected positively on the session and the practical knowledge gained as they prepare for greater participation in Fiji’s electoral processes.

Ms. Iva Loki, a prospective candidate nominated by SODELPA, described the session as “interesting, informative and empowering as a female candidate.” She said the session had given her confidence “to stand up and be a voice for women.”

Ms. Merewairita B. Mataisau, a prospective candidate nominated by the NeXTGEN Alliance Party, described what she learnt from the session as “awesome,” adding that she intends to utilise the knowledge and insights gained during her campaigning.

Discussions covered how political parties operate and where key decisions are made, building credibility and relationships within parties, preparing for nomination and understanding candidate selection processes, navigating internal dynamics and competition, and maintaining personal values and political identity.

The session also explored challenges faced by women and youth within political parties, including gatekeeping, access to resources and networks, and opportunities to have their voices meaningfully heard. The discussions highlighted the importance of developing a strong track record, building trusted relationships and networks, seeking mentorship and being prepared for the requirements and expectations associated with nomination and political participation.

The mentorship series forms part of CDD’s Empowering Fiji’s Women in Politics project, supported by Misereor. Through the series, CDD is connecting prospective candidates with experienced political leaders and professionals who can provide practical guidance drawn from their experience in politics, governance, law, media and public leadership.

The broader project seeks to strengthen the preparedness, confidence and participation of women and youth in Fiji’s political and electoral processes as they prepare for the upcoming General Election.
