One Fiji, Many Stories: Video Contest

Stereotypes are among the most destructive forces in any society. They reduce individuals to labels, encourage prejudice, and create divisions that are often passed from one generation to the next.

In Fiji, harmful stereotypes about different ethnic communities are rampant, as is amply evident on social media. Yet stereotypes are unfair generalisations. They cannot tell us who a person is, what values they hold, or how they will treat others.

The reality is that there are good and bad people in every ethnic community. Most ordinary Fijians work together, study together, play sport together, do business together, and help one another every single day.

Perhaps it is time we started telling those stories.

Dialogue Fiji is proud to launch the “One Fiji. Many Stories.” Video Story Competition.

We invite you to create a video that tells a true story promoting goodwill, understanding and friendship across Fiji’s ethnic communities. It may be your own story or the story of another individual, family, workplace, school, sports team, organisation or community.

Perhaps it is the story of:

• Two lifelong friends from different ethnic backgrounds
• Neighbours from different communities who have always looked after one another
• Colleagues who overcame cultural differences and became like family
• Communities coming together across ethnic divides after a cyclone
• A teacher who nurtured students without discrimination
• A sporting team strengthened by its diversity
• An act of kindness that broke down prejudice
• Someone whose actions challenged a harmful ethnic stereotype

Whatever the story, it must show how people have built trust, friendship, understanding or goodwill across ethnic divides — and remind us that Fiji is stronger when its communities stand together.

Through these stories, we hope to remind ourselves that before we belong to different ethnic communities, we are all human beings. It is these everyday acts of friendship, kindness and understanding that build social cohesion and strengthen our nation. A more cohesive society is also a more trusting, cooperative and prosperous society.

Prizes

Prizes will be awarded for the three best stories:

• First Prize: $2,000
• Second Prize: $1,000
• Third Prize: $500

How to enter

• Create a 2–10 minute video
• Open to all Fijians — individuals or groups can enter
• Send entries to programme@dialoguefiji.com
• AI-generated videos or images are not allowed

Submissions open: 15 July 2026
Submissions close: 30 September 2026

Let’s replace stereotypes with stories, prejudice with understanding, and division with dialogue. Let’s show the Fiji we know is possible.
