What is a referendum?
A referendum is a public vote in which eligible voters decide a specific question directly, rather than leaving the decision to Parliament alone.
A referendum asks voters to decide a specific question directly — often a Yes/No choice. It is used in many countries for major constitutional decisions. The rules for how a referendum is conducted, who may vote, and what threshold is required are set out in law.
In Fiji, a referendum has been proposed as part of the 2026 constitutional reform process. The exact question, date and rules are set by the relevant law and authorities.
